Black and White

Black and white has made its comeback.  And no—I’m not talking about the inkwell filter on Instagram.  Pants, dresses, skirts, jackets, hats, bags, and shoes are all donning a colorless look this season.  Was it Apple or the Paris fashion houses that started this movement? I guess the world will never really know.  But regardless of whom is claiming the trendsetter rights, black and white will make you look effortlessly cool, even if you changed your outfit 17 times before leaving the house.

Wearing black and white allows you to play with different styles and patterns, without worrying about what colors look good together.  Here’s the catch—just because you’re wearing “neutral shades” doesn’t mean you can go put on that aggressively bright, orange scarf or your overpriced pink heels which you spent two months salary on (even though realistically, you’ll wear them one time and end up walking home barefoot because they’re actually more painful than watching a NY Jets game).  The point is, that black and white is just that—black and white.  Keep your accessories black, white, or an extremely muted color otherwise the look is no longer a look and you just ruined everything.  Seriously, you ruined EVERYTHING. How do you feel now?

How to wear black and white better than a cookie:

  • Black and white stripes are fine, vertically or horizontally, but pleaseeee never as a jumpsuit…or you will look like you dressed up as an inmate for Halloween.
  • I may be stuck in 1955, but white pants after labor day are so not ok unless you’re on some amazing tropical vacation.
  • Be careful with white button downs and black pants (see last week’s about the button down).
  • Don’t over-accessorize, but try and wear fun and flirty accessories and hairstyles to make your look more feminine.
  • No all white shoes.  Ever.  I can’t, sorry they’re just the worst, please don’t.
